    HVERDAGEN I THAILAND   I

  • TEMPLES AND DONATIONS

    temples1

When living in Thailand it cannot be avoided visiting the many beautiful temples and also it is inescapable in the mornings to see the monks on the streets collection food from persons, who in return get blessed. Being married to a Thai the very pragmatic religion (pragmatism is the trademark of the Buddhism) slowly gets to you and at the same time, as you get familiar with the many rituals in the temples plus the numerous daily experiences with the many faces of the religion, one starts to ask a few questions, an important one being, what happens to all the donations the temples receive? How do the temples work and how are they administered? Nitta and I have seen many temples all over Thailand and they vary greatly in size, decorations and standard of maintenance.

  • SONGKRAN IN THAILAND

Posted on April 16th, 2000 admin 4 comments

Some of our friends in Denmark have asked what SongKran actually is and how it is celebrated in Thailand, so here are a few answers. The word SongKran, which you may spell in one or two words comes from The Sanskrit language and marks the entrance into a new solar year, the summer starts. The dates are firm, from the 13th to 15th of April. In the old times the Thai calendar was adjusted to our calendar system in the West (The Gregorian) on the 13th of April but in 1940 the government decided to make the adjustment on January 1st. But still the Thai calendar follows the Buddhist Calendar so here we have now today the 16th of April 2543. The Buddhist Era starts 543 years before the Christian era, so we are sometimes a little confused here. On all official documents we use the Thai dating system and on the postage stamp as well, but in banks we used the Christian calendar. This festival, and believe me it is a grand show, is also celebrated in Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos. Just a short introduction to the history or myth about this tradition:

  • WEDDING RITUALS IN THAILAND

As a general rule there is no such thing as a specific Buddhist Wedding. The reason is that this religion does not officially recognize marriage as sacred although monks attend to chant and bless the couple. There is also no marriage certificate to get from a temple even if the chief monk can give you some sort of a statement but it has no legal value.
